A new ice cream parlour could be coming to Hull city centre under new plans.

The owners of the hugely successful Caffe Gelato outlets in Newland Avenue and Princes Avenue in west Hull now want to bring a taste of summer to King Edward Street.

Yilmaz Aydemir has submitted an application to turn Leisureland Amusements into a new café which would be similar to those in the Avenues.

Leisureland has been in King Edward Street for a number of years but the operators have decided not to renew the lease.

In the design and access statement, the applicant says: “The applicant has two cafés serving predominantly Italian ice cream on Princes Avenue and Newland Avenue and both are now well established businesses.

“The applicant is seeking consent to open the same type of establishment at 70 King Edward Street and provide a new offering within this part of the city centre.

“As part of the proposal, customers will be able to takeaway food although this will be a secondary aspect to the main café element of the business.”

There will be seating for about 50 people on the ground floor and a further 20 on the first floor.

The applicant expects the café will create five new jobs but there will be opportunities to expand if the café proves a success.

The applicant also argues the proposals will boost the city centre economy with the arrival of a popular and established business.

In the design and access statement it says: “This part of the city centre has struggled in comparison to other areas but it is considered that the opening of a highly regarded and well established Hull business in this area will provide the stimulation required to rejuvenate this area.”

Caffe Gelato in Newland Avenue has proved innovative and has recently introduced candy floss ice cream and the ability to print selfies onto your coffee.

The application will be considered by Hull City Council’s planning committee in June.
